One quiet morning, my garden offered me a miracle.
Perched atop a cactus that’s been standing since 1979,
tiny golden blossoms glowed in the early sun—
like treasure revealed, just for a moment.
🌟 Planted in 1979, Silent for Decades
In the middle of my garden lives a cactus—
44 years old, born the same year as the first Sony Walkman.
It’s tall, serene, and a little mythical.
In Korea, we call it “Yongsinmok” — the Dragon Candle Cactus,
named for its coiling, upright form that resembles a dragon’s rise.
In the West, it’s known as the Blue Candle Cactus
for its cool blue-green hue and columnar silhouette.
It rarely changes.
It has never asked for attention.
But on this day—it bloomed.

✨ A Goblin’s Wand and Gold
As sunlight swept across the garden, I happened to look up.
There, atop the cactus, were glowing yellow dots.
I stepped closer—and found tiny golden flowers, clustered and radiant.
It felt like a scene from a fairy tale.
As if a goblin had waved a magical bat across the sky and whispered:
“Gold, appear—clink! Silver, appear—clink!”
That day, my cactus wore a crown of light.

🌸 A Bloom You May Never See
The Blue Candle Cactus blooms rarely—and briefly.
Its flowers open quietly and last only a day or two.
Most people live alongside such cacti and never witness them bloom.
I thought I would be one of them.
But after 44 years,
this cactus chose to speak.

🌿 Strength with Surprise
Its body is bold—tall, sculptural, and strong.
But its flowers?
Delicate. Small. Golden as honey, soft as silk.
There’s something poetic in that contrast:
A giant that blossoms gently.

🍀 That Morning, I Felt Rich
I stood before this 44-year-old cactus and whispered aloud:
“Today, I feel rich.”
It wasn’t because the flowers looked like coins.
It was because they appeared unannounced,
and would be gone by tomorrow.
In a life full of structure and repetition,
this brief moment of surprise felt like treasure.
