Italian-Style Baked Spaghetti Recipe

Baked spaghetti, golden on the top and rich and tender underneath, is an Italian-style dish that can be made quite easily at home.
When cooked spaghetti is combined with tomato sauce and plenty of cheese, then baked in the oven, it becomes a much deeper and heartier dish than ordinary pasta.

It is especially suitable for a weekend meal or for serving guests, and it is also wonderfully filling when made in one dish.
Today, I would like to share a simple Italian-style baked spaghetti recipe that you can easily make at home.

What Is Baked Spaghetti?

Baked spaghetti is a dish made by mixing cooked pasta with sauce, topping it with cheese, and then baking it in the oven.
It has the comforting feel of a southern Italian home-style meal, offering the rich flavour of a baked pasta dish with a simpler preparation than lasagna.

The top becomes slightly crisp, while the inside stays soft and full of the savoury richness of cheese and sauce.

Ingredients for 2 to 3 Servings

200g spaghetti
2 tablespoons olive oil
1 tablespoon minced garlic
1 onion
150–200g minced beef or pork
300g tomato sauce
1 tablespoon tomato paste
A little salt
A little black pepper
A pinch of oregano
A pinch of basil
150g mozzarella cheese
2 tablespoons Parmesan cheese
A little butter

Preparing the Ingredients

Finely chop the onion and prepare the garlic.
Tear the mozzarella into small pieces or slice it thinly in advance.
Lightly grease an oven-safe dish with butter or olive oil.

Cooking the Spaghetti

Bring a large pot of water to the boil and add salt before cooking the spaghetti.
It is better to cook it about 1 minute less than the recommended time on the package.
Since it will cook again in the oven, it should not be boiled until too soft.

Once cooked, drain the spaghetti well and toss it very lightly with a little olive oil so it does not stick together.

Making the Sauce

Heat olive oil in a pan and sauté the minced garlic and chopped onion first to bring out their aroma.
When the onion begins to turn translucent, add the minced meat and cook it through.
Once the meat is done, add the tomato sauce and tomato paste, stirring well.

Season with salt, black pepper, oregano, and basil, then let it simmer over medium-low heat for about 8 to 10 minutes.
This helps the sauce develop a much deeper flavour.
If the sauce is too thin, the final dish may turn soggy, so it is better to keep it slightly thick.

Mixing the Spaghetti with the Sauce

Add the cooked spaghetti to the pan and mix it evenly with the sauce.
At this stage, instead of saving all the cheese for the topping, mix in some of the mozzarella and a little Parmesan as well.
This makes the inside even richer and more flavourful.

Baking in the Oven

Transfer the spaghetti mixture into the prepared baking dish.
Scatter the remaining mozzarella and Parmesan evenly over the top.
Bake in a preheated oven at 180–200°C for about 15 to 20 minutes.

Once the cheese has melted and turned golden, and the edges are slightly crisp, it is ready.
If you would like a deeper golden finish, use the grill or top heat for the final 2 to 3 minutes.

Tips for Making It Even Better

For baked spaghetti, the sauce is what defines the overall flavour.
Even if you use ready-made tomato sauce, sautéing garlic, onion, and herbs properly first will make the dish taste much richer and more homemade.

Using only mozzarella gives a soft, stretchy texture, while adding Parmesan brings more depth and savouriness.
You can also replace the meat with aubergine, mushrooms, or courgette for a vegetable-based baked spaghetti.

When This Dish Is Perfect

When you want to make something more special than an ordinary tomato pasta
When you need a visually pleasing dish for guests or a small gathering
When you are craving a warm, cheesy oven-baked meal
When you want to prepare one generous dish to share

Final Thoughts

Italian-style baked spaghetti is a dish that is not difficult to make, yet makes the table feel much more abundant and inviting.
The freshness of the tomato sauce, the richness of the cheese, and the deep flavour created by oven baking come together beautifully in one satisfying meal.

It is easy to adapt with ingredients you already have at home, so it is a lovely recipe to try on a weekend or on a special day.
An ordinary plate of spaghetti becomes warmer, richer, and far more comforting once it comes out of the oven.
