When I open the kitchen door that faces north and step outside, a lovely yellow flower is the first to greet me. I can’t help thinking, “How can a yellow be this delicate and clear?”
This flower is called Euryops pectinatus. The name felt unfamiliar at first, so it was hard to remember. But once I started calling it “comb-leaved daisy,” the shape became easy to picture—and the name stayed with me much more naturally.
What lingers in my heart even more is its flower meaning. “A harmonious couple”—the moment I hear that, it feels as if a warm love is blooming from the flower itself. If a flower carries such a meaning… wouldn’t it be wonderful to place it in a corner of the couple’s bedroom?
A little story behind Euryops pectinatus
This flower feels like a small story in itself. The genus name Euryops means “large eye,” and its sunlit yellow bloom looks as if it’s gazing clearly across the garden. The species name pectinatus means “comb-like,” describing leaves that are finely divided like the teeth of a comb—almost as if they’re set to catch the breeze.
Some sources also describe it as a pioneer plant that can be among the first to re-establish after wildfire. Perhaps that’s why this yellow flower can feel like a symbol of “blooming again.”
Euryops pectinatus | Comb-leaved Daisy
It’s also written or pronounced in slightly different ways in Korean (such as 유리오프스/유리옵스), and it’s commonly known as “comb-leaved daisy.” In English, it’s called Golden Shrub Daisy, Golden Euryops, Grey-leaved Euryops, or Yellow Bush Daisy.
Its scientific name is Euryops pectinatus (L.) Cass. It belongs to the daisy family (Asteraceae) and is an evergreen shrub with silvery grey-green foliage and long-lasting yellow daisy-like flowers.
It is native to South Africa, and in the wild it is known to occur mainly in the southwestern Cape region. As a genus, Euryops is largely distributed in southern Africa, and some species extend into other parts of Africa and the Arabian Peninsula.
An evergreen small shrub with “yellow flower eyes”
Euryops pectinatus is an evergreen shrub, but if you grow it for many years, its stems become woody and it can look like a small flowering tree.
The genus name Euryops comes from Greek roots meaning “broad/large” (eurys) and “eye/face” (ops). Many explanations say it was named that way because its large, vivid flowers resemble “eyes.”
The species name pectinatus comes from Latin and means “comb-like (pectinate).” It refers to the leaves, which are finely cut like the teeth of a comb. That’s why its silvery foliage can sometimes remind you of dusty miller.
Common names and English names
Euryops pectinatus may appear with slightly different spellings in Korean, and the pronunciation sometimes shifts in everyday use. In English, names like grey-leaved euryops, yellow bush daisy, golden euryops, and golden daisy bush are widely used.
You may also see names like “Silver Lace” or “Silver Dust” in plant sales channels, but these are more commonly used for other silver-foliage plants, so confusion is easy.
For example, “Silver Dust” is often used for dusty miller (Jacobaea maritima, formerly Senecio cineraria). If the name feels unclear, the safest way is to check whether the label lists the scientific name Euryops pectinatus.
Key characteristics of the comb-leaved daisy
Flowers: It blooms at the tips of stems. The bright yellow daisy-like flowers are about 5 cm across and last a long time. Like typical members of the daisy family, the outer “petals” are ray florets and the center is made of disc florets.
Blooming season: In warm climates it can bloom for much of the year (often most abundantly in spring). In cooler regions, it may bloom from early summer into winter. In my north-facing garden, it’s already in full bloom from February.
Form and foliage: It’s an evergreen shrub (often around 1–1.5 m). As it ages, the lower stems can become woody and the plant can grow more open. The leaves are alternate and deeply divided in a comb-like pattern, with a grey-green tone and fine hairs that give a soft, silvery look.
Fruit: It forms an achene-type fruit (a dry fruit that contains a single seed).
Euryops pectinatus Flower meanings
The flower meanings of Euryops pectinatus—eternal beauty, pure you, a harmonious couple, and bright love—are generally understood as interpretations that naturally arise from the plant’s appearance and habits.
Eternal beauty: It’s evergreen and the blooms persist, giving the impression of “beauty that lasts.”
Pure you: The neat, simple daisy form is often associated with innocence and purity.
Bright love: Its clear yellow color instantly evokes sunlight, warmth, and cheerful energy.
A harmonious couple: The round, balanced flower form and the way it blooms evenly on branch tips can feel “well-matched” and harmonious.
